Abstract: |
Excavations were undertaken as part of the fourth and final phase of archaeological investigations in the areas that were to be affected by the construction of rock armour sea defences. Although no artefacts were recovered, detailed stratigraphic sequences were recorded and palaeo-environmental data obtained. The palaeo-environmental analysis was based on detailed sampling for the recovery of microfauna, microflora and macroflora. Although poorly preserved, pollen, diatoms, ostracods and foraminifera were recovered indicating the presence of former saltmarsh in what was now a beach location. The presence of pollen grains of cereal crops indicated a Neolithic or post-Neolithic date for the saltmarsh environment. [Au(abr)] |
