Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based study and structural recording were undertaken of the bridge carrying Bridge St. across the river Hiz. The structure dated from 1784, with some later repairs and alterations. During autumn 2001 a watching brief was undertaken during construction work on the bridge. The lower brickwork of the bridge was exposed and recorded, and was shown to be resting on short timber piles set in a foundation trench apparently backfilled with cinders. Other timbers were found within the silt, including two large planks, though these were most likely the timbers used during construction work in the 1960s and abandoned at that time. [Au(abr)] |
