Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed development area identified that the site lay within a region which had been subject to sustained activity from the mesolithic period onwards. Fourteen sites lay in the surrounding area, including cropmark enclosures, a Roman road, a medieval castle, Civil War earthworks and an early modern grand house. Part of an undated cropmark complex which probably represented former field boundaries lay within the proposed development area. It was noted that construction of the M3 motorway and services along the A30, along the southern and northern edges of the site respectively, could have damaged known and unidentified remains.
