Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of 30-40 Baldwin Street produced some evidence for late 11th-12th century dumping of clay and refuse on the surface of the marsh in the study area, but this part of the town was not developed before the mid-13th century. The River Frome was diverted, the "Marsh Wall" built, and streets and buildings constructed. The area appeared to have been a merchants quarter in the medieval period. The site itself lay behind the medieval street frontage in an area of gardens and orchards. There was renewed development in the late17th-18th century when stores and warehouses were built and the land use remained the same until the present office blocks were built. [Au(abr)] |
