Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in conjunction with site investigation works. Nine geotechnical test pits were excavated across the site to investigate the depth of the foundations of the existing buildings and were observed in order to determine the presence of any earlier archaeological remains and levels of truncation. The investigations undertaken on the site seemed to confirm the view that the areas of the highest archaeological potential were located in the open garden/courtyard area where Test Pits 1 and 2 were situated and in the northernmost basement close to hand-dug Test Pit 11. Test Pit 1 showed that the 17th century Artillery Ground wall survived in part; though it was abandoned at a later date the same line was reused and still exists today. Test Pit 2, however, showed that this survival was not complete along its length, as it was totally truncated within this pit by a later pit. Contemporary deposits had survived in these test pits and it was therefore possible that the rest of the area may reveal information connected with the area's uses from precinct to houses. Hand-dug Test Pit 11 held traces of possible earlier construction on the site and a possible buried land surface in the form of the surviving brickearth at 10.09m OD. The other test pits were also dug within basement areas but their present floor levels were only circa 0.7m above the brickearth level in HP1. At the levels at which gravels were found in these pits the brickearth had been truncated. It was not certain whether the truncation of the brickearth was due to historic quarrying, hence the dirty appearance of the gravels, or whether it was due to the construction of the basement themselves. The only likely survival of any archaeological features in these areas was likely to have been in the form of deep features such as ditches or wells. [Au(abr)] |
