Abstract: |
The archaeological desktop assessment concluded that the site may have had an Anglian trackway running through its eastern end. It had been within the town boundary since at least late medieval times and probably lay inside the town walls. However, there was slightly conflicting evidence on this issue. The site contained burgage plots facing onto both Pottergate and Narrowgate. These became infilled with poor quality housing. All maps since 1769 showed the area to have been built up although the present buildings on the site only dated from the 20th century. There was no indication that any of these buildings had deep foundations or cellars. There was a considerable height difference between the ground level on the site and that on neighbouring properties. This was more likely to have been due to build up of land on the site than excavation of the land outside. This build up may have preserved archaeological remains from the medieval and post-medieval town. In view of the possibility that archaeological remains may have survived, it was recommended that a programme of archaeological evaluation be carried out. [Au(abr)] |
