Abstract:
The excavation of three engineering test-pits was archaeologically observed in order to fulfil a condition upon planning consent for an extension to the present building. A previous evaluationn had revealed a 19th-century brick-walled building on flint footings which cut into a clay layer containing occupation debris. This sealed layers of peaty clay which also contained occupation debris. The evaluation had concluded that the site contained little in the way of medieval or post-medieval structural evidence. The test-pits revealed that, in the main, the principal more recent deposits encountered in the evaluation trench continued across the width of the site, thus reinforcing the evaluations findings.
