Abstract:
A standing building survey and an evaluation were undertaken at a proposed development site, which lay close to a late 18th century colliery and an area of earthworks which represented a possible post-medieval shrunken settlement. The evaluation trenches revealed a pit of modern origin and a probable remnant of demolished masonry which may have been a boundary wall. The remains of the buildings consisted of a farmhouse and a range of outbuildings and additions. The walls of the buildings were constructed of randomly coursed sandstone rubble. In general, earlier masonry was bonded with clay, whilst later masonry had either lime-based mortar or modern cement. The internal rooms had either stone floors or pitched sandstone sets. Sections of medieval masonry had been retained within the farmhouse, which appeared to have been extensively redeveloped and expanded during the 16th-17th centuries. A range of new outbuildings also appeared to have been built at that time. Elizabethan and 17th century artefacts provided the principal dating evidence. [AIP]
