Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment of land required for alterations to the A45/A445 at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, south of Coventry, involved earthwork and geophysical surveys and trial trenching. This revealed evidence of the medieval and later settlement, from the 12th-17th century, of a shrunken village north of the parish church. An earlier evaluation within the area, and around 650m to the south east of the church, had uncovered part of a Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age settlement (1990; see entry for Wolston Fields, Wolston, in "The Assessment Gazetteer 1982-91", p223). Both sites would be severely affected by the road improvements. Proposed mitigation measures included area excavation of the Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age site and further sample excavation of the medieval settlement.[AIP] |
