Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was carried out on the site. The initial phase involved the mechanical excavation of the upper layers and overburden. The site was divided into 2m squares, from which ten bucket samples were sieved. Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval finds were recovered. The second phase involved the mechanical excavation down to the natural gravel/sand subsoil. A complex of ditches, a sunken track, a timber lined well, an oven, a pottery kiln and an enclosure delimited by post holes, all of Roman date were identified. Five Saxon sunken houses, three post hole buildings and a series of pits all dating to the Late Saxon period were also identified. [Au(abr)] |
