Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a car park which lay close to a SAM, 'The Priory', and was situated at the edge of the area of a medieval village. Two ditches were revealed which reflected the lines of the medieval streets of West Stoke. Although their date of origin could not be established, it was possible that they had been significant late medieval boundaries. Hollows along the tops of both contained 17th or 18th century material, indicating that they had been visible as shallow earthworks at that time. A fairly deep soil which sealed the infilled ditches reflected the use of the area as a field in the post-medieval period. Activity which probably dated to the construction of a Memorial Hall at the site in the 1920s was also noted. [AIP] |
