Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken during the consolidation of masonry around the tops of the walls and inside the vaults, and the waterproofing of the earth covered roof of the south range of Bradley Hall. Bradley hall was a substantial house standing in a large moated site and was a significant manorial centre in the medieval period and the house was remodelled in the Renaissance to become a grand mansion. Since that time parts of the house had fallen into disrepair and work had been previously carried out over some time to consolidate and preserve the buildings. While the work was intended to disturb the fabric as little as possible, the information gathered could be added to the material gathered from earlier work, antiquarian accounts and the Griffith engraving and produced a glimpse of the south range in the 17th century. A double staircase, rising from the gardens laid out in the old infilled moat and fishponds, gave access to the principal floor of the house. There was a stately saloon, with a decorative plaster ceiling, where an ancient fireplace faced modern leaded windows in two bays projecting towards the road. [Au(adp)]
