Abstract: |
A two phase archaeological evaluation, involving both desktop survey and trial trenching was carried out to the rear of 44-50 High Street. The standing buildings were timber framed and pre-dated the earliest cartographic evidence examined which showed that until relatively recently the development area was open fields and meadows. The footings of some demolished buildings were revealed as well as a ditch (probably marking the rear of the medieval tenement plots) and a pit of post-medieval date. A single sherd of medieval coarseware was recovered from the upcast soil. [Au(abr)] |
