Abstract: |
The desktop assessment dealt with the proposed Transco Buttsash to Fawley 300mm gas pipeline. The proposed 1.3km route lay within the hamlet of Hardley, to the east of Beaulieu Heath. A total of eleven sites were located on the present path of the pipeline and/or its easement. Only one site on the course of the pipeline, Hardley village, was of national importance. The area was unavoidable, and the impact of the pipeline on the hamlet would be direct and uncertain. The village was in existence by 1086, and may have begun as a Saxon settlement. Further archaeological investigations, adopting a variety of techinques, were recommended to assess the archaeological potential of the site and to assess the damge that would be caused by intrusive development.
