Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out on the digging of a drainage trench dug on the site of Godalming Wharf. The excavation showed that the surface of the wharf had been made up by imported chalk, probably in the 1760s. In the 1830s, the bank may have been altered following the infilling of the Barkhouse Cut. This may have extended the river bank a few metres to the north. The original edge of the wharf was marked by a compacted chalk surface that supported an access trackway alongside the river. South of this was a storage area used to store coal, tiles and pipes in 1900. A concrete foundation that was found was probably the edge of this storage area, or 'pens' as they are marked on a plan of 1900. The concrete wall was put up at some time after 1832. It can not be said for certain when the area became used for coal storage, but this may have always been its use. The archaeology, as revealed by the excavated trench, largely supported this chronology. [Au] |
