Abstract: |
Archaeological excavations were undertaken as part of an archaeological condition placed on planning permission. The excavations revealed evidence for three phases of building, all possibly from the medieval period. A stone wall found close to the street front was thought to have been associated with a building recorded in 1311 as the 'Stonhouse'. Three postholes were found sealed beneath this wall. These, and other postholes found nearby, were thought to have formed part of an earlier timber structure. One of the sealed postholes contained a fragment of a clay roof tile, which suggested that the earlier timber building had a roof of those materials. At the back of the property a series of cess pits were revealed which clearly respected the property boundary between 35 and 37 High Street and were dated from the 12th - 14th centuries, suggesting that the building was at least that old. 18th century cellaring had damaged some early evidence, however, the archaeological stratigraphy on the site survived remarkably well and there was considerable scope on the site for further advancing the knowledge of medieval Alton's origins and development.
