Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of five trial trenches (5.2m x 4.4m, 6.7m x 3.9m, 2.5m x 5.0m, 8.8m x 2.0m, 2.7m x 2.3m), was undertaken in order to fulfil a condition upon planning permission for the redevelopment of the site for residential accommodation. The site revealed a sequence of alluvial deposits in trenches 1, 2 and 3 to the south of the site near the drainage channel known as the 'Town Ditch'. To the north near the High Street, trench 4 produced some alluvial deposits and a small ditch of probable late medieval date while trench 5 revealed relatively modern dumped deposits overlying natural gravels. None of the deposits or features were thought to indicate past occupation of the site. The evidence indicated a 'wetland environmant, in existence until the post-medieval period, with significant deposition of alluvium by the watercourse known as the 'Town Ditch''. Over time, at least from the late medieval period, attempts had been made to manage this wetland environment through drainage. By the early modern period, the course of the town ditch appeared to have been stabilised and reclamation dumps laid over the marshy alluvium and the site utilised for agricultural or hortivultural purposes.
