Abstract: |
An archaeological recording exercise was undertaken within a moated enclosure which was a SAM. The aim of the work was to record late 15th to early 17th century wall footings which were to be disturbed by the construction of a wall. The SAM included a quadrangular moated site and fishpond, with the platform being occupied by a timber-framed red brick house, a Grade I Listed Building. The house had been built in 1500-1, near the site of a shrine to St. Aylott, as a hunting lodge for the abbot of Walden Abbey. A brick sample was taken from the exposed wall during the recording exercise, and was identified as Tudor by a specialist. It was concluded that the wall represented part of the south wall of a Tudor outbuilding, which had probably been contemporary with the house. [AIP] |
