Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. In the medieval period, the site was probably part of the medieval hospital of St. Helens. The site also contained parts of the former gardens and orchards of Old St. Helens House, a residence built on the hospital estate. The site was not built up until the early 19th century and was demolished in the 1970s. The long use of gardens and lack of intensive post-medieval development suggested that preservation of archaeological remains may have been good. The new proposed buildings were expected to damage or destroy those remains. [Au(adp)] |
