Abstract: |
An assessment to determine the original extent of a large ground-floor chamber in the west range of the monastic buildings of Coverham Abbey and the post-monasic development of the area, was undertaken. The study identifed that the remains of Coverham Abbey were of exceptional interest in preserving a Premonstratensian church plan (cruciform with fully-aisled nave and chancel) and an exceptionally well-preserved Premonstratensian guest hall. It was also shown that further architectural features and structural evidence was probably concealed by the current plaster and inserted partition walls, the removal of which would permit both detailed archaeological recording and the restoration and appreciation of an important medieval apartment.
