Abstract:
The evaluation was carried out at the site of the proposed Tesco foodstore. In the first stage, four trial trenches were excavated outside of the factory and a single test pit was excavated within the factory itself to test the underlying deposits. Following demolition of the factory a further four trenches were excavated within its footprints. No surviving archaeological deposits of medieval or earlier date were discovered in any of the interventions. Evidence for extensive ground disturbance relating to post-medieval quarrying was encountered in the north of the proposed development area. Elsewhere the natural subsoil was encountered directly beneath the factory floor slab. Brick walls and drainage runs relating to the development of the factory buildings were also uncovered. In areas of previous quarrying disturbance the ground appeared to have been consolidated with brick rubble prior to the insertion of a new concrete slab to support the wooden factory floor. This was probably part of a programme of alterations undertaken in the 1940s. [Au(abr)]
