Abstract: |
Magnetic and earth resistance surveys were undertaken in advance of the construction of a church hall, at a site which was bounded by a wall demarcating the edge of the recently extended graveyard of the parish church. Earlier geophysical survey and excavation on a site to the south had revealed evidence for a medieval field system and a 16th century ore-roasting hearth. The church itself possessed both Saxon and Norman characteristics. The resistance survey identified several anomalies, including three which reflected the presence of near-surface solid material, probably rubble spread as a base for the graveyard boundary wall. Three further anomalies could be explained by surface features, although there was no obvious visible explanation for a seventh. The gradiometer survey also identified anomalies which could be explained by modern features. An area of magnetic disturbance measuring 8 by 18m could potentially have had an archaeological explanation, given the discovery of the hearth less than 150m to the south-east, but it could also have been caused by recent bonfires or cinders. A curvilinear feature may have represented a ditch. It was noted that the curvilinear anomaly and much of the disturbed area were located outside the area directly affected by the proposed development. [AIP] |
