Abstract:
A series of narrow ditches or gullies, and a single pit containing part of the skeleton of a cow, were revealed. These were sterile of dating evidence, but stratigraphically predated other features on the site and may have been prehistoric in origin. The majority of ditches, pits and post holes revealed were firmly identified as Late Anglo-Saxon based upon shelly ware pottery, with examples of both St Neots ware and Thetford Ware as well as plainer types. A single sherd of Ipswich ware suggested that a Middle Saxon presence on the site might have existed. Pottery dating to the high medieval period and post-medieval periods was also found and it was therefore likely that the site continued to be closely associated with occupation for most of the present millennium. A deposit of clunch, probably from a demolished building, was found to fill a depression in the natural chalk. The fill also contained post-medieval pottery and sealed Late Saxon and earlier features. [Au(adp)]
