Abstract: |
The assessment showed that the site lay at the centre of the planned 13th century town of Wokingham. Previous settlement appeared to have been in the vicinity of All Saints Church, to the north east of the site. In the 13th century, the Bishop of Salisbury laid out a new town with burgage plots on either side of four streets centred on Market Place. At least one demolished medieval building was known to have stood on the site. Other former medieval buildings would have existed along the street frontages of Market Place and Rose Street. Some below-ground disturbance would have resulted from the wall footings, foundations and services of the existing buildings though the current surface car park in the northern part of the site was thought to have had a minimal impact on below-ground deposits.
