Abstract: |
Excavations were conducted in Darlington Market Place following a series of trial excavations. A series of ditches were revealed, the most substantial of which was thought to be the boundary of a graveyard belonging to a church of possible Anglo-Saxon date. All the ditches were cut by a series of 31 graves of 11th-mid/late 14th century date. From the medieval period onwards archaeological features suggested that buildings of an industrial nature stood on the northern half the site, with the southern part remaining open ground. The site was truncated in the post-medieval period, perhaps as a remodelling of the Market Place. [Au(abr)] |
