Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as a result of proposed refurbishment and development. The study showed that the site lay within the core of the medieval town defined by the town defences and could provide detailed information on the origins, development and economic fortunes of the town. The line of the town defences formed the eastern boundary of the site and possibly also the southern boundary. If this area conformed to a layout typical of many medieval towns, the most complex archaeological deposits were likely to have lain immediately adjacent to the street frontages, with the rear areas used for industrial/commercial activities or for rubbish disposal. However, the confining nature of the defences could have led to an alteration to this pattern with additional lanes and buildings located immediately adjacent to these defences. The topography of the site was such that there was a possibility that the southern parts had been infilled to create a level area. If infilling took place in relatively recent times, above average quality of preservation of any medieval deposits buried beneath it was a possibility. [Au(adp)]
