Abstract: |
The site of Brunel University College was located within the London Borough of Richmond. The site comprised a complex of standing buildings in a campus layout. These included buildings such as the historic Gordon House and other more modern buildings in the northern portion of the site that were set out in a quadrangular formation. There were a number of open areas on the site and, in the southern portion, a tennis court. The site was not located within an Area of Archaeological Potential. The site did not contain any SAMs. It did, however, contain the Grade II Listed Building of Gordon House and its associated stable block. It was also situated within the St Margarets Conservation Area. The desk-based assessment showed that the site may have been subject to significant past human activity, particularly within the medieval and post-medieval periods. The site appeared to have first been developed in the early 17th century. It was situated within a landscape that appeared to have largely been shaped by the presence of high-status houses and gardens in the 17th-19th centuries. In the early 19th century a building in the northern portion of the site seemed to have been associated with the production of Isleworth Pottery. However, this might have been a private residence of the owners of the factory, or simply shaded on the map in order to denote that a building was present at this time rather than actually being associated directly with the factory. Much of the site was now covered by modern buildings associated with Brunel University College. A significant degree of truncation to stratigraphic soil horizons was likely to have occurred on the site. A number of structural remains were present upon the proposed development site over the years, which were considered to have been of differing scales of importance. However, most of the remains dated from the last two hundred years or so and were well documented. [Au(abr)] |
