Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in the precincts of Horsham St Faith's priory in advance of the proposed use of an area as a burial ground. The work involved magnetometer and resistivity surveys and the excavation of trenches to investigate anomalies identified by the surveys and sample an area where human remains had previously been found. Trenches were also positioned to investigate an area of woodland and a patch of roughly ploughed land which also lay within the proposed development area but where geophysical survey had not been possible. Several linear features and a few small pits/post holes were excavated. In the westernmost trench, closest to the priory itself, two large disturbances were infilled with demolition debris and a small probable hearth was excavated. [Au] |
