Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the observation and recording of the enabling works underpin pits and the excavation of three trial trenches, two of which were 5m by 2m and the third 10m by 2m. The archaeological sequence consisted of silts and gravels overlain by a layer of peat containing very few finds or evidence of nearby occupation. Overlying the peat was a further organic layer that contained much domestic refuge (pottery, bricks, cloth, leather, animal bones etc). This layer, of 18th century date, probably reflected refuse dumping from the newly constructed residential developments on the east side of Marylebone Lane. The sequence was completed with substanial backfill dumping of gravels, sands and brick rubble, perhaps when building development extended west of Marylebone Lane in the second half of the 18th century. These deposits were clearly filling a large low-lying waterlogged feature which occupied the majority of the development site and may have extended beyond it. It was considered more likely that this was a flooded brickearth/gravel quarry of 18th century date, rather than the course of the Tyburn itself. It was considered that this feature had been adequately sampled and recorded at the evaluation stage and therefore no further fieldwork was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
