Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment and evaluation was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a new indoor swimming pool and associated accommodation as an extension to the existing sports hall. The examination of historical maps and the SMR, combined with the results of the evaluation, suggested that no archaeological features or deposits were present on the site. The only material recovered from this site was residual, in the form of two sherds of medieval pottery and a fragment of burnt flint, possibly indicative of nearby prehistoric activity, and found in what was probably a 20th century deposit. This layer appeared to be an alluvial clay that had been spread on top of the plough soil, possibly as a result of dredging the nearby river and/or to level the site for the creation of the tennis courts.
