Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in order to gather sufficient information to identify and establish the extent, nature, character, condition, quality and probable date of any archaeological and historic features within the survey area. The study area, which covered a total of 65.4 ha, lay adjacent to the Rivelin reservoirs, on the south side of the Rivelin Brook, west of Sheffield. Land use was primarily coniferous and broad-leaved woodland, with some open moorland at higher levels. Cartographic evidence confirmed that the present woodland was established in the 19th century. A total of 34 archaeological sites were recorded within the survey area, with a further 20 sites lying within a 500m wide buffer zone. Some prehistoric settlement and burials sites had previously been identified on the moorland fringes, but ground conditions at the time of the survey meant that only a few of these features could be positively identified. The absence of medieval or early post-medieval settlement or agricultural exploitation sites implied that the area was never intensively managed during this period. Part, if not all, of the survey area was within the Rivelin chase, a hunting ground owned by the lords of Sheffield in which economic and entrepreneurial activity would have been strictly controlled. Wood pasture or wooded common and moorland was likely to have dominated the region. The majority of the identified sites were ascribed to the late post-medieval period, and these comprised a possible reservoir, two sheepfolds, various field boundaries, several former quarries and footpaths. Of particular interest were a number of 20th century grouse troughs, represented by small depressions carved out of gritstones slabs into which rainwater was channelled. The major site within the survey area was the Wyming Brook Drive, a former carriage drive constructed by Sheffield City Council after it had bought the woodland in 1908. This impressive landscape feature was designed to open up the area for visitors, creating an out-of-town amenity. The route still survived intact, together with several bridges and culverts which had a characteristic architectural style. [Au(abr)] |
