Abstract: |
A trench across a field boundary was excavated to try and determine the possible origins and history of the boundary. The construction of a spillway for the adjacent reservoir was to result in the removal of this earth bank and stone wall. The bank was believed to predate the existing wall, probably an enclosure wall of early 19th century date. A shallow scoop on the east side provided material for the initial construction of the bank, which was substantially enhanced over a long period. It had a small stone revetment on the eastern side, and there was some disturbance on the top of the bank indicating the previous presence of a hedge. It was likely that the hedge bank formed one side of a drove-way, this way still separated two farms and it was likely that this pattern of ownership was established considerably before the 19th-century period. There was no direct dating evidence for the bank. [Au(abr)] |
