Abstract: |
Planning permission was to be sought for residential redevelopment on the margins of a large plateau, on a ridge between the Enborne and Kenney. Lobb and Rose (1996) pointed out that current land use had meant that the geology was relatively understudied. Fieldwork on the plateau gravels on the northern side of the Kenney had revealed several sites and finds of prehistoric and Roman date. It was therefore likely that the similar topographic and land-use setting of the Enborne Valley may have yielded similar finds. Distribution maps reproduced in Lobb and Barnes showed clusters of chance find material in this area of Newbury; also, non-invasive fieldwork to the east of the proposal site had recovered some prehistoric struck flint that could be regarded as an occupation site. The results of the SMR search indicated sites and finds within the search area dating from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Roman periods. Palaeolithic handaxes were not deemed to be indicative of a settlement site; however later periods demonstrated more intensive activity, for example a Bronze Age barrow cemetery and a number of Roman sites. Post-medieval sites were also well represented on the SMR, such as the first Battle of Newbury, but the site itself was little used until the 20th century, according to cartographic and documentary evidence. Quarrying and development activity may have traumatised archaeological remains, but it was thought that the most significant areas were undisturbed. A field evaluation was proposed in order to elucidate archaeological information, due to the landscape in which it was situated. [Au(adp)] |
