Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, which had once been occupied by a medieval manor, and which lay immediately to the west of a medieval castle. The castle was represented by extensive earthworks which showed that the inner and outer baileys had been ditched on their east side, and that this had probably continued around the north end of the outer bailey. During the evaluation, the west side of the inner bailey ditch was identified. Its course could be postulated southwards to pass just to the east of Manor Farm and to link with the surviving eastern earthwork. The lines of an eastern outer bailey ditch and of a third ditch of a similar scale were also identified. Although no relationship was established between this third ditch and the bailey ditches, it was suggested that a new western enclosure had superseded those originally surrounding the castle, creating what had effectively been a moated enclosure for the late 12th or 13th century manor which had replaced it. Alternatively, this enclosure could have been part of a primary circuit marking the site of a manorial centre which had pre-dated the castle. A small number of medieval features and deposits were identified elsewhere across the site, including a ditch, a pit, and a second pit which may have represented the site of a limekiln. The position and suspected date of the latter may have associated it with the building of the manor house rather than with the castle. No further evidence of the former manor house was found, although sherds of later medieval pottery were recovered. Features of a probable post-medieval date included a pit, a ditch and a trackway which had been founded on the uppermost fill of one of the medieval ditches. Infilling of the east side of a pond could be dated to the early 19th century, and had either followed or been associated with terracing to the east. This infill had created a platform for building, and had been occupied by 19th and early 20th century cottages, shops and gardens until their recent demolition. A brief outline was given of the implications of the development proposals for the archaeological resource. [AIP]
