Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken on land adjacent to Stadmans in Dunsford. The site lay on the west side of the village of Dunsford and on the south side of the road leading from Dunsford westward in the direction of Drewsteignton. The site lay at an altitude of 82.00m AOD, partially within the Conservation Area of Dunsford which encompassed the historic core of the village and was therefore regarded as being archaeologically sensitive. With the exception of the medieval hedgebank ditches seen in trench two, the evaluation did not identify any significant archaeological structures or deposits. The stone/earth bank 504 was presumably originally contemporary with the flanking ditches while later maintenance to the bank added nineteenth and twentieth century artefacts to its build. This stone/earth bank was extant in the mid-twentieth century although the flanking ditches had perhaps silted up and become lost from view not long after construction in the medieval period. The quantity of medieval pottery from the very limited excavated samples of the ditches in trench 2 (11 sherds in total) did suggest nearby domestic occupation at that time. The unbonded curving wall 519 seen in trench 1 did not appear on any map but it was identified as a wall extant in the mid-twentieth century which separated an area of garden from the rest of the plot .
