Abstract:
Detailed geophysical surveys were carried out on four areas north, east and south of Acomb Grange. The surveys aimed to identify features of archaeological interest and thus contribute to a programme of site investigation prior to possible further site development. Geomagnetic anomalies within the North and South Fields and within the Caravan Site were found to be intense and dominated by concentrations of magnetic dipoles, indicating that substantial deposits of brick and ferrous debris were present near the surface. A further source of strong dipoles was a possible buried iron pipe leading to Acomb Grange. An area of recent infill in the vicinity of a new vineyard had also contributed to the soil magnetic 'noise'. These strong magnetic anomalies hindered the detection of more subtle magnetic anomalies that might possibly have arisen from archaeological features. Electrical resistivity survey was employed in an effort to detect subsoil features beneath a garden east of Acomb Grange. A pronounced resistivity anomaly was detected suggesting a former garden feature or a ditch infilled with rubble. A pair of weak, positive magnetic lineations were traced through the South Field and may have indicated a set of soil-filled boundary ditches of possible archaeological interest. [Au(adp)]
