Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of boreholes and trial pits associated with a proposed development. Part of the site lay within the area of medieval Birmingham, and parts lay within the former grounds of a medieval priory. Desk-based assessment of the proposal area had identified eight zones of potential archaeological survival. Observations made during the watching brief confirmed and reinforced the earlier identification of these zones. No sealed archaeological deposits were revealed, although a deep layer of material in Corporation Street may have sealed earlier deposits. The recording of the subsoil horizon at a depth of 1m below the present ground surface in Dale End suggested that any surviving archaeological deposits were likely to lie close to the surface. It was recommended that further below-ground work carried out within zones 1-5 should be monitored, but that no further archaeological work would be necessary in zones 6-8. [AIP] |
