Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed activity of late post-medieval and modern date. Trench 2 was dominated by small features and the remnant of a possible path. Small post holes were possibly associated with the backyard of an early 19th century structure fronting Basbow Lane. A small structure was indeed shown on the 1898 OS map to the east of the timber-framed structure fronting Basbow Lane that still survived. Abraded pottery sherds of a general 17th/18th century date were recovered from the post holes in Trench 2, indicative of activity in the vicinity at this time. A brick structure in Trench 1 was probably a small cellar, possibly associated with the slaughterhouse which was believed to have formerly stood on the adjacent plot. [Au(abr)] |
