Abstract: |
A trench was excavated to investigate the 'southern arm' of a possible moat to determine the potential impact of cleaning out and redefining the feature as part of the remodelling of the gardens. Two stone revetting structures, one of which was potentially of medieval date were recorded, but no evidence was found of stratified infill deposits which could be thought to be of archaeological significance. Subsequent examination of the feature following drainage and the clearance of surrounding shrubs established that the feature was a natural hollow, which had at no time been extended to enclose the site of the medieval tower house. Part of the original north face of the Jacobean house was exposed following the removal of an early 20th century porch. A photographic and drawn record was made of roof lines associated with an earlier building, and monitoring was undertaken during the creation of a new first floor doorway. [Au] |
