Abstract: |
The observations identified a cobbled surface, probably constructed in the 19th century. A slightly earlier cobbled surface was observed in the southern end of the site. Its poor state of preservation indicated that it may have been robbed and reused in the reconstruction of the later surface. No pre-19th century features or artefacts were observed. It was therefore possible that clearance had occurred on the site, in advance of the cobbled surfaces. Apart from two subterranean structures, likely to have been cellars of post-medieval date, no further evidence was found to indicate former occupation of the site or the documented occurrence of a fire in AD 1743.
