Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for an access road and the excavation of service trenches at the site of a housing development. Neolithic and Early and Middle Bronze Age artefacts had been found in the surrounding area, and the site of an Iron Age enclosure which had been preceded by one of Bronze Age date had been recorded. Roman activity had also occurred in the Taunton area, whilst Saxon settlement at Taunton itself was documented. The proposed develpoment area lay beyond the extent of the medieval town. During the watching brief, three prehistoric flint flakes were recovered, but no archaeological features or deposits were revealed. It was noted that the roadline and service trenches represented no more than 4% of the surface area of the site, and that the observed absence of archaeological remains should not be considered to reflect the likely archaeological content of the whole area.
