Abstract: |
An assessment was undertaken of the proposed western extension of Hemington Quarry. The study area lay within a reach of the Trent that had previously yielded nationally significant cultural archaeological remains inlcuding the medieval mill dam, bridges and fishweirs. The geomorhpological context of the study area together with the proximity of these structures, suggested that it had high archaeologicl potential, particularly for riverine structures and environmental deposits. However, deep stratification caused by channel migration and subsequent alluvial deposition effectivley prevented the prediction of such sites prior to quarrying. Survey, evaluation and watching briefs with a contingency for full excavation was recommended. [Au] |
