Abstract: |
The archaeological recording of two trenches and an exploratory pit on land at 44-45 St. Thomas Street, Weymouth, during October 2005. The site was located in the historic core of the former borough of Melcombe Regis, in an area where evidence for medieval settlement might be expected. The work established that much of the site has been disturbed by modern services, as well as bombing during World War 2. It did, however, reveal evidence for a number of wall structures, one of which was on a different alignment to buildings shown on 18th century and later maps. No associated dating evidence was, however, recovered. Other walls revealed were likely to have represented the surviving remnants of 19th century and later buildings. [Au(abr)] |
