Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it had limited potential for the discovery of significant prehistoric remains, but that previous investigations in the immediate vicinity had revealed substantial remains of Roman, medieval and post-medieval date. The Roman remains had consisted chiefly of 1st and 2nd century clay and timber buildings, which had been followed by more substantial masonry buildings. The area of the site had been known as the "butchers' market" in the medieval period, and had been intensely occupied. The archaeological potential of the site had been reduced by a Victorian basement, as well as foundations and lift pits. However, between 0.5m and 1.0m of Roman deposits could have survived beneath the basement slab, with localised deep cut features such as pits and wells dating from all periods potentially extending below this level. The proposed redevelopment involved a deepened basement, which would be likely to have an effect on the surviving archaeological deposits. It was recommended that archaeological monitoring should be carried out in the event that any test-pits were to be excavated as part of a geotechnical investigation of the site, perhaps with additional pits being excavated for purely archaeological research.
