Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, which lay within the historic core of the village of Dodworth. A cluster of timber-framed buildings, some of which had been demolished, lay close to the site, and engineers' trial trenches had revealed a stone-lined well and a brick floor within the proposal area. During the evaluation, the well and a number of buildings of probable post-medieval date were observed, and an elongated pit was found. Large quantities of pottery dating from the late 17th-20th centuries were recovered from the buildings and associated demolition debris. Other artefacts included two copper alloy objects, fragments of clay pipe and brick, and small amounts of oyster shell and glass. The truncated remains of two buildings observed within one of the trenches were likely to have formed part of a contiguous line of buildings fronting onto High Street. [AIP] |
