Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during investigation into the cause of a recurring drainage problem outside the entrance into the Fountain Garden. Removal of the capstone revealed a silted-up soakaway built of stone and brick. The soakaway was rectangular in shape, about 480mm x 615mm x 1.5m deep into a bedrock base. The north and west sides were formed by stone courses whilst the south and east sides were composed principally of hand-made bricks. On the east side the brick coursing at half depth was seated on a lintel stone that was a resided architectural fragment with a longitudinal channel that could be felt but was inaccessible for viewing. The slight gap between the back of the lintel and the brick backing to the recess proved to be the source of continued dampness and suggested an intentional design to attract water to this point. The use of bricks on the up-slope side appeared to facilitate easier seepage of water from the damper sides of the surrounding soil. The bricks suggested a construction date of somewhere between the late 18th -early 19th century. Hibbert's views of the Castle in the 1820s showed the Great Court under grass and being grazed by sheep. [Au(abr)] |
