Abstract: |
A Stage 1 archaeological trench evaluation on land adjacent to Upper High Street, Taunton, was undertaken. The site was located within and adjacent to the medieval ditch and bank defences for the town, close to their southwest corner. Four trenches were machine excavated on the site, with those in the southern portion revealing infilled cellars of probable 19th century buildings. These buildings were probably demolished and the site levelled during the first half of the 20th century. In the northern portion (rear) of the site courtyard surfaces associated with the former buildings were present. It was likely that the construction of the cellars will have removed any evidence for earlier archaeological activity that may have been formerly present. Elsewhere on the site, the survival of intact deposits was likely to be highly localised. [Au(adp)] |
