Abstract:
A review of previous geoarchaeological work revealed a sequence of Late Pleistocene to Holocene aged deposits in the area, laid down through a combination of marine and fluvial depositional processes. It was suggested that archaeological deposits may have been sealed within the waterlogged alluvial sequences, and if so, levels of archaeological and environmental preservation were likely to be exceptional. Sites and Monuments data was also investigated, which indicated human exploitation of the area since the Palaeolithic, with the highest potential for uncovering archaeological sites from the Roman period onwards. Furthermore, an examination of cartographic evidence and complimentary historical research showed that since medieval times the landscape had been subjected to an ongoing programme of drainage works, culminating in an established field network, and low lying farmed landscape. The possibility of submerged, or buried wrecks was also investigated, and it was argued that the potential for discovering maritime archaeology was low. However, it was concluded that the proposed development lay with an area of significant archaeological and palaeoenvironmental interest, and that the overall potential for encountering such remains was high. Thus the archaeological resource, and cultural heritage were a significant component of the proposed development area. [Au(adp)]
