Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation of the site of the proposed new Village Hall revealed a complex sequence of features and deposits of medieval date. At the beginning of the sequence, a series of layers and several large inter-cutting pits, most of which contained pottery of medieval date, were excavated. One partly excavated feature was augured to a total depth of about 2m from the modern surface and contained a mass of large flints embedded in a cream yellow silt clay with some mortar in its upper part. In at least two places, concentrated patches of slag, ash and hammerscale were revealed suggesting that metal-working took place at the site. In another area a thin deposit of fired clay, revealed in situ in the trench section, probably represented a small hearth. A possible post hole was also seen in the trench section at the same level as the probable hearth. At the top of the sequence, immediately below the topsoil, were make-up deposits and a possible chalk surface. Pottery recovered during the project spanned the Late Saxon (10th to 11th centuries) to medieval periods, a single earlier sherd also being found, but the pre-Conquest material appeared to have been redeposited in later contexts.
