Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed a large curvilinear ditch feature of potentially regional importance on a prominent position on the east side of the River Crane valley. Although undated this feature was assumed to be prehistoric, and was suggested either to be a circular enclosure similar to that at Springfields Lyons, Essex or to be hengiform in structure. To the immediate south, a probable rectangular feature containing a considerable quantity of wattle-impressed daub was partially excavated. Provisionally dated as Saxon, this indicated the presence of an established settlement adjacent to the Rover Crane. Two trenches further to the east contained several small undated features.
